I hope it's worthy: *is nervous*

---

This is the second time. This is the ‘brief visit’. This is called you tracked him with your eyes down hallways and into the Chief’s office and not once did you say a single word.

You shut yourself in an exam room, the one time he got too close, and Meredith pasted on a smile and went through the “how are you” and “it’s nice to see you again” and “oh, she’s not here today”.

“Maybe that’s for the best,” he’d said, Burke, Preston Burke, cardio god extraordinaire and ex-fiancé, and if you were the kind of woman who cried in closets or on cold floors, this would be as good a time as any to do it.

But you don’t. And you aren’t. And you can’t be, not for him, not for Owen, not for anyone.

Word around the hospital is he’s been here visiting a friend and he’s on the next flight out of Seattle-Tacoma.

“You should’ve said something to him,” Meredith presses, later, even if she’d been your willing accomplice and you shake your head and leave.

Even later, when Owen asks, “what is your problem?” after the fifth time you’ve snapped at him, you make damn sure you leave the hospital before he does and hopes he takes the hint.

You don’t know if he does though. You don’t know because one minute you’re driving home, and the next you’re taking an exit in the opposite direction and twenty minutes later you can see blue signs and white letters illuminated in your headlights letting you know the airports in two miles.

There’s no way you’re doing this.

And then you do.

You do, and when you get there you realize that you don’t know what his flight is or if it’s left yet, and you’re torn between wishing it has and hoping it hasn’t.

It’s not like you came here knowing what you’re going to say even if you do find him, which in a crowded airport that you’re wandering fairly aimlessly (you don’t even know where he’s heading; you can’t even rule anything out) isn’t likely. It’s not like you even realized you were going to get out of you car once you got here.

You used to know. Used to be spontaneous and make decisions and know but something’s changed in you, something’s broken, and you don’t like it or want it or know how to fix it.

But it doesn’t matter what you were going to say.

You don’t find him.

He finds you.

“Cristina?”

It’s just your name. Not shocked, not angry, not frustrated or kind. Just your name.

In the past two and a half years that you’ve had to think, a list of things you’d like to say to him was created. They ranged from ‘fuck you for leaving me’ to ‘I hate you’ to ‘I miss you’. But you were never supposed to be able to say any of those things.

Instead, you end up with this:

“I look in the mirror in the morning and sometimes I don’t know who I am. I haven’t held a heart in forever. I’m with a man I don’t understand. I used to be admired, people used to envy me, and now I’m lucky if I don’t get overlooked and end up on peds rotation.” You keep waiting for him to look away; you keep waiting for yourself to look away. But you both hold steady. “I look in the mirror and I don’t recognize myself, and I used to when you were here.”

“Okay.”

“Okay.”

His flight’s boarding. Alabama and the number on the ticket in his hand.

Burke doesn’t move.

ARGH!
I never want to like fics where Burke and Owen are there, because it just hurts my heart too much!
But damn you for writing something so wonderful.
If it happened this way in the show, I don't know what I'd do.
Such perfection. That speech. Oh my gosh. It was genius. It was like it had been ripped from one of the episodes.

Fabulous. I'm a big Owen and Cristina fan but I adore this because it seems so perfect to who both Cristina and Burke are. Great job
