witches and goblins aren't the only things rearing their ugly heads on Halloween {meredith, alex} slybrunette November 1 2008, 19:31:19 UTC
It works out so that they’re the only ones home Halloween night. Derek and Izzie are both on the same surgery, both still in the OR when they left, and so it’s just them and a dark house and small children knocking on the door, searching for candy that Meredith knows is somewhere around here. This was supposed to be Izzie’s job, not theirs.

“How many closets are in this place?” Alex asks, when he passes her from the second time, this time headed into the dining room to look there. Meredith, for her part, had been digging through the cabinets for about the past ten minutes, to no avail.

“Three.” She pauses, thinks, corrects. “No, four. Not counting the ones in the bedrooms.”

He makes a groaning sound. “Oh, is that all?”

She shifts a bag of what looks to be various kinds of tape, ends up narrowly missing a mousetrap in the back that appears to be still loaded (she doesn’t want to know how old that is), and finally gives up and moves on to the cabinets on the other side of the kitchen. “Did you check the ones in the bedroom?”

“No.”

“Well why not?”

Alex pokes his head back in the door, looking more and more tired of this as the seconds ticked by. “Because who keeps candy in the bedroom. And where would there be room?”

He’s right; their closets are pretty full. Not that she’s going to let him know that. “Yeah, well, we’re kind of running out of places to look. I don’t know where she could’ve put it.”

“Are you sure she even bought it?”

“It’s Izzie.” Meredith replies, but he just stares at her blankly. “She never met a holiday she didn’t like. She was occupied last year so you didn’t get the full Christmas experience like we did the year before, but I can pretty much guarantee you will this year. And then you will understand.”

“Then call her.” He says, heading back out into the living room, apparently done searching.

“She’s probably still in surgery.”

There’s another knock at the door, the third in less than half an hour. “Again?”

“Shit.” She says, then accidentally kicks the cabinet under the sink open, bags of candy spilling out. “Found it,” she practically screams.

“Good. You get it.”

“Oh no, I’m not answering the door. I found it, I get immunity.”

“You can’t make me.”

Meredith can’t help but smile to herself at how trivial this is. “Yes I can.”

“I’ll answer the door naked.”

“Good idea. Candy and anatomy lessons.”

She can practically hear the smirk as he replies, “Only if you help with the demonstration.”

“I like it when we’re five.”

“Maybe we should be the ones knocking on doors and stealing candy.”

“I second that.”
