He does say, “she’s only three; that’s won’t be for awhile.”
Truth be told, her mother never took her once. She worked every Halloween consistently, because no one else really wanted that job. Just like she worked every Thanksgiving and almost every Christmas. She was always left to her own devices, after her dad left, and she’d taken herself or gone with friends every year from six to sixteen. Meredith had no intentions of parenting her own daughter in any way that resembled her mother. Derek seemed to get that, at least.
They both drew the line at dressing up though. Much to their three-year-old’s protests that that’s what everyone does (that’s what you think when your world is still so small and everything is so brand new, all you can less biting). What they did was take off work early, six in the evening, just as the sun was setting but before it was pitch black, and together they took her down streets to over-decorated houses with smiling adults and not so smiling teenagers who handed out candy, and laughed when she came running back to them with her plastic bucket of candy shaped like a jack o’lantern.
Because that’s what good parents, the kind of parent she had always both wanted and, later, wanted to be did.
