It’s the first night that she eats dinner with him since they crashed there. No more sitting far off, but within eye-sight -- accidentally on purpose (because that way he could see her and it would both drive him crazy and make her feel safe) - painting her nails or reading and rereading the few magazines that she had with her like she was scared if she stopped then she would lose all connection to the outside world.

Too late for that.

Instead she sits down next to him with one of those packages of airline food that she normally turns her nose up in front of pretty much everyone, even if she picks at them later on when she thinks no one’s looking, and he looks at her for a full minute before she even catches him. “What?”

“Run out of nail polish?” He tries for a joke, glancing at her fingers and toes. Both are pristine, perfect, just like they always are.

“Shut up,” she tells him, a warning tone in her voice, and he doesn’t even bother with a comeback because this, for her, is a better mood and he’s going to take advantage of that while he can. So he just smiles and shifts his weight so that he’s closer to her, ever so slightly, resting his palm in the sand, brushing her side and something hard and plastic. He looks down, locating the offending object, only to find a single pair of black and brown sunglasses - the same ones he’d given her earlier - with one of the earpieces hooked into the waistband of her denim shorts.

The olive branch, apparently.

“I’m glad you’re here,” he tells her, because he has to be the one to say it -- he always has to make the first move, just like with the sunglasses -- otherwise it’ll never get said, and it needs to be. It might be what keeps her here, with him, just feeling appreciated.

If that’s all it takes then he’ll make the first move for the rest of his life.

This was just lovely, thank you so much! You have such a good grasp of those two's relationship and I could just picture this one happening. She's just so IC here and he totally is, too. The last line is just so them, I loved it. Thank you again!

Their relationship was, originally, my favorite thing about Lost, so I definitely love writing them, even if I don't have the chance to much anymore. Thank you for giving me that chance and for the kind words.
