Summary: AU. It's a bad buddy comedy is what it is.

It’s a bad buddy comedy is what it is.

“I think there’s something wrong with the engine.” And Hurley’s shouting over the radio, which must be turned up to about a billion decibels because Charlie insists that it will attract people which would be good since they’re currently stranded on a stretch of road with very little traffic apparently. They’ve been here ten minutes and they have yet to see a single car pass by. “Hit the gas.”

Charlie does. They get thick plumes of smoke for his trouble. “That’s not good right? It doesn’t look good.”

“No dude, it’s not.”

“I thought you said you knew how to fix cars.” Apparently Charlie gets tired of screaming over the radio because he steps out of the car and finds Hurley from his position in front of the open hood of the car.

“Yeah, when I was ten and helping my dad restore the Camaro.” He was a kid; this doesn’t make him an expert. “We should just call a tow truck.”

Charlie produces a cell phone from his pocket, waving it at Hurley, and he dimly remembers telling Charlie the same thing five minutes ago.  “No reception, remember.”

Which means they are indeed stuck here, until they can find someone else with a car or, you know, a better cell phone plan. “I knew this wouldn’t work. I’m cursed; it’s not the numbers, it’s me.”

“Oh great, you with the crazy talk again, that’ll help. Definitely.” He narrows his eyes, which prompts a too quick, “Sorry. But it’s not like we’re exactly on a schedule here; it’s a vacation.”

Right, a nice relaxing vacation. This is not the correct way to start one. Hurley steps back from the still steaming hood of the car, leaning against the side of the car facing the road, squinting against the sun to see as far up the road as he can, hoping in vain to see a car coming this way. Nothing but the road, trees, and blue sky.

“It’s not like we haven’t been stranded somewhere before,” Charlie says, offhandedly in a kind of childish way, retreating back to the car where, thankfully, the air-conditioner is still working perfectly fine, and it’s not funny but it kind of is.

It’s better to find the humor anyways.
