Title: I Don't Want To Be Lonely No More
Fandom: Grey's Anatomy
Characters/Pairings: Callie, Cristina
Word Count: 580
Rating: PG-13
Summary: She sleeps at Meredith's and Callie sleeps at the apartment and that's worked fairly well. Or it has for her. Apparently that wasn't mutual.
Cristina doesn’t like living with other people. And yes, that could be considered a lie because she lived with Burke and she spends more time in Meredith’s house than in her own, even before Callie moved in, but she was with Burke and Meredith is her best friend. So it’s more of a half truth; they’re more exceptions to the rule than anything else.
Which means that this whole living with Callie thing shapes up not to be as fabulous as she once thought. She lives there, she pays rent, all her stuff is there, but she is physically not.
She doesn’t know Callie all that well, and that didn’t seem to matter at the time because they could fake it. They had common ground; they were angry, they were scorned. But that only goes so far when there’s not much else that they share.
So she sleeps at Meredith’s, and Callie sleeps at the apartment and that’s worked fairly well. Or it has for her.
That’s the other thing about Cristina. She’s not used to having to deal with other people’s emotions. She’s not used to having to care about their emotions.
That’s probably why on a Thursday night, ten minutes after she’s come home and is about to leave for Meredith’s house, only having dropped by for clothes for the next morning, it comes as a complete surprise when Callie stops her before she leaves.
“Where are you going?”
Cristina frowns, turning with furrowed brows. “Meredith’s. Why?”
“Do you always go there every night?”
“Most. Not every.”
Callie nods, and her eyes are red, like she’s either tired or been crying and Cristina really hopes it’s the first one because she isn’t the type who can deal with people crying. “Even when I wasn’t here?”
“Yes.” Callie gives her a look that clearly says she doesn’t buy it. “Just not as frequently.”
That the other woman seems to believe. And that should really be it, which is why she turns to leave again. She gets about as far as her hand on the doorknob before Callie cuts back in. “Could you not.”
This Cristina really doesn’t get. “Excuse me?”
“Not...go.” Cristina stops, looks at her closely, completely confused and not sure what to do. “I’m sorry, I know this is weird but I’ve had a really horrible day and the quiet is really starting to grate on me. So if you could just...stay here tonight.” Callie drops her eyes, like maybe she’s said too much, and really Cristina’s not sure if she has or hasn’t. That’s still up for debate. “I mean I completely understand you and Meredith have this...whatever, it’s not important, I just...get lonely.”
Lonely. Cristina thinks she can understand that feeling. She felt that way a lot after Burke left. That’s how she got in this routine of sleeping at Meredith’s in the first place. She didn’t like the way the room seemed to echo when she walked or talked or breathed. It had never bothered her before she met Burke; she hated that it bothered her after he’d left.
She doesn’t say anything to her request. She doesn’t really know what to say. But she does put her bag down on the couch and start trying to remember where she left the phone, hoping all the while that Callie will take that as a sign that yes, she’ll stay.
Cristina thinks, though she’s not sure of this, that she hears a mumbled “thank you”.
