Title: Forever/Right Now
Fandom: Grey's Anatomy
Characters/Pairings: Alex/Meredith, slight Derek/Meredith
Word Count: 228
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Meredith doesn't like the term forever.
Meredith doesn’t like the term forever. It’s a scary concept, not to mention an unrealistic one. Forever is a thing of black and white movies and pink covered novels and she’s never been into either of those, and she certainly isn’t into this.
But Derek is. Derek would be the guy who buys you flowers and remembers your anniversary without having to be reminded. So when he starts talking about marriage and kids and growing old together, things that stink of forever, it makes her want to run and never go back. Except she always does, go back that is, and then they get stuck in the same self-destructive cycle where he tells her he wants more than just sex, he wants commitment, and she tells him she can’t give him that. She can’t do forever because she doesn’t believe it exists.
The word forever isn’t in Alex’s vocabulary. Neither is marriage or the phrase “make love” (and she’s always hated that phrase, it’s always turned her insides cold). He thinks of things as temporary, as right now, and she likes that about him. She likes that there’s no pressure. She likes that she can fuck him in the on-call room and still banter with him over lunch without anyone knowing they’ve even seen each other naked. She can do right now because that’s the way she works.
