Author's Note: I owe this to
tranquil_me  who wanted something involving Desmond and Juliet. I couldn't turn it into a shipper-y fic, but I tried to incooperate them both in there. I'm trying to get back into the groove of writing so this isn't my best but it's something.
Summary: Her opinion, her knoweldge, isn't worth anything to these people unless they're in a bad spot and out of options.

It’s an unlikely pairing, and yet Juliet finds herself surprised that they haven’t found themselves stuck in the same situation before, essentially stuck with each other.

They’re the two outcasts of the group.

Sawyer makes a bunch of noise about how he’s the outcast, the one person who just doesn’t belong. Yet she sees him in those little group meetings all the time. People actually listen to him. People value his opinion just as much as they do Jack’s or Sayid’s, even if no one says anything about it.

She’s sat in on those meetings. She’s been on the receiving end of a few wary looks that are usually accompanied by brief glances toward Jack (and without him she wouldn’t be sitting in on anything) plainly stating that they will speak about this later, preferably when she’s not around. Hell, Sawyer is one of the people giving those looks, though not quite as often as Sayid (and with him it’s like all he can see is the word ‘other’ tattooed on her forehead, like a scarlet letter).

Yes, her opinion, her knowledge, isn’t worth shit to these people until they’re in a bad spot and out of options. Like with Claire. And yes, it was a set up but even still they all doubted her, they all hesitated to let her come within ten feet of their little virgin mother (all except Jack and he’s trusting but he’s also a fool for leading with his emotions and it’s only going to get people killed; she doesn’t want to be one of them).

And when they lose people because of that freighter and the people on it somehow people look at her like that’s her fault too. It doesn’t matter that she was on a completely different part if the island from the group making that damn call. That was Jack (again fool, because he let his emotions blind him, let the happiness and relief kick in before realizing that this was almost too easy, too seamless).

Funny thing, that’s right around the time Charlie drowns and people start looking at Desmond like that’s his fault (especially Claire who apparently hasn’t figured out that they are on an island and it is dangerous and these things happen). They don’t want to blame themselves. Each one of them protects the other and it’s the short straw for everyone else. Her and Desmond are just easy targets.

She sought him out once, trying to find common ground in that sole fact, but the two of them, even just talking, felt awkward. So it’s more like silent, barely acknowledged, companionship, in that both of them are on the outside looking in, but that won’t bring them together.

Sometimes, she wonders what will happen when this group runs out of easy targets, when they have to start blaming themselves. When it’s not just Jack who takes responsibility, when fingers can’t be pointed at her or at Desmond or at the Others (or Locke because he’s just as alienated at this point, and part of her thinks ‘good, get out while you still can, before they turn on each other’ and that’ll be the real mess, won’t it?)

Thinking about that collapse, thinking about what it’ll be like once they have to start preying on their own, it makes her glad she’s not part of that. It makes her glad she’s an outcast.
