[After many months of seeing this man in Naomi's dreams, he's finally starting to wonder...]

...A machete?

Yes, that's right. He's had it since before I can remember.

It isn't often someone chooses to fight with a machete. As a lightweight and versatile tool, it's more than adequate for use in tropical or temperate wilderness. As a weapon, a machete isn't as useful as a sword such as a katana -- the lack of a guard makes parrying difficult, it isn't practical for use in sparring.

I had no idea.

If all of that is true, why do you use one?

As I've stated, it's a lightweight and versatile tool. It's also easy to conceal. The wide and flat blade gives more surface area to deflect bullets, making it easier to defend myself from gunfire.

Oh, of course. I should have realized...

I'm uncertain as to what use a civilian would have with such a tool. The environment of your dream doesn't appear to be overgrown, I don't see why it would be necessary for him to keep one.

My brother was a soldier for his entire life. He rarely went anywhere without at least some weapon at his side.

[Rolls her eyes] Including my graduation.

Question.

"Graduation"?

...Graduation is what students attend when they complete their schooling requirements. It means that they are finished with their education and can either go on to either a higher level of school or begin employment.

. . .

"School"?

Oh! You...You don't understand the concept of school yet, Frank?

No. I'm unfamiliar with that term.

[Don't cry, Naomi. Don't cry.]

I-I had no idea... School is, well, an institution that is designed to give children an education...Meaning it's a place to learn basic concepts about life, the world we live in, and many other things. There you would learn how to read and to complete mathematical equations. Things like that.

Does that make sense?

...How is that different from what I've learned on the battlefield? I understand how to survive, isn't that all there is to be taught?

Not entirely, Frank. Civilians, for one, need to learn things that will benefit them for a life lived off the battlefield, right?
