Back from Belgium

The huz and I enjoyed a five night trip to Brussels and other parts of Belgium. We went to Bruges, I think, five years ago and loved it (we do plan to go back!), but we wanted to check out other areas of the country. Pete's family from his maternal side is Belgian and we visited the family ancestral home of Mechelen (which is a lovely place, worth checking out and there are no tourists!).

We also went to a geocaching event which was kind of what got the ball rolling with this trip. It was kinda-sorta planned on a whim as one last hurrah to the continent before I start stressing over my Visa renewal--ack!

Brussels was lovely, though, and a good spot to base yourself if you want to travel to other areas, even other countries! We saw trains going to Amsterdam, Dusseldorf and Luxembourg. My French was appalling, but the multi-lingual Belgian-folk were only too kind to switch to English. I wish I could do that! I found that I could speak and read French well enough, but having someone speak it to me, well, my brain would take way too long to translate. I guess those eight years of school French didn't stick!

Unfortunately, I returned sick with a cold and have been mostly bed-ridden these past couple of days. I'll probably go out for an afternoon walk like I did yesterday. Hopefully it won't be raining. Speaking of rain, I am enjoying these cooler days. It's maybe 16 degrees celsius, but with a hint of sun coming out those are perfect conditions in my mind. The summer got way too hot for my liking at times!

Work is going okay-ish. I had a stressful week before we went away. It's really hammering home how much we need the workers we lost. I'm glad I had a getaway to look forward to, but I'm not sure when my next break will be. I haven't got anything planned until after Christmas. I'm hoping I don't completely lose my marbles before then!

Well, I am going to take my boogery self elsewhere and possibly make a hot drink that I may or may not be able to taste. Ta ta!
