Arctic Monkeys, Mika, Kate Nash, Take That Win 2008 Brit Awards

Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. band the Arctic Monkeys led winners at the 2008 Brit Awards announced tonight in London.

The quartet won the top prizes for best British album and best British group.

Take That also won two awards, for best live act and best single. The Foo Fighters picked up two prizes, for best international group and best international album.

Singers Mika, Kate Nash, Kanye West, Adele and Kylie Minogue also were honored, while Paul McCartney finished the evening with a special Brit for his outstanding contribution to music.

U.K. singer Amy Winehouse, who won five Grammies this month, performed ``Valerie'' at the Earl's Court ceremony with her producer Mark Ronson, who was named best British male solo artist.

The BRIT Awards are the British Phonographic Industry's annual pop-music awards, sponsored by Mastercard Inc., and presented in one form or another since 1977. Winners receive a Brit statuette and sales usually rise after a victory.

-British breakthrough act: Mika. (Winner chosen by BBC Radio 1
listeners).
-International male solo artist: Kanye West.
-British male solo artist: Mark Ronson.
-International female solo artist: Kylie Minogue.
-International group: Foo Fighters.
-British female solo artist: Kate Nash.
-International album: Foo Fighters, ``Echoes, Silence, Patience &
Grace.''
-British group: Arctic Monkeys.
-British single: Take That, ``Shine.'' (Decided by live public
phone-in.)
-British album: Arctic Monkeys, ``Favourite Worst Nightmare.'
