Step Brothers

So went to see the new Will Ferrel flick, "Step Brothers", on Friday. Figured what the hell. And it was actually funny. It definitely kept in the vein of "Anchorman" and "Talladega Nights", in that its main protagonists were stunted man-children and the humor stems more from the scattershot left-of-center stuff. So if you don't have issue with Ferrel's schtick, you will have a good time. Me personally, I don't fawn over the man's talents, but when he is on he is so very on. His efforts are spotty at best, but this is actually a noteworthy entry in what will most assuredly be a lengthy career that devolves into nothing but heartfelt family comedies for Disney that aren't funny, and in fact, rather sad and empty (see "Kicking and Screaming"). But I digress.

Most importantly, it is rated "R". Because it has, without a doubt, the most prodigious use of the F-bomb in recent memory. That's one of the running gags, I think, that every character drops it without hesitation and in pretty much every scene, whether it is needed or not. It just works. And there is something about Mary Steenburgen getting so flustered at her son and step-son fighting to the death on the front lawn that all she can utter is "What the fucking fuck!?!" That just made me laugh. Mostly because I say that all the time myself. Oh, and when Ferrel rubs his scrote sack all over John C. Reilly's drum set and they actually show it (what I assume is a stunt-scrote), I think Coke might have shot out of my nose had I been drinking any. Totally unnecessary, which is why it was ultimately a laugh-riot.

So if you want to see a dumb comedy with some actual funny, try "Step Brothers". Or wait for DVD so you can see the unedited version, which I am sure will be even better.

Favorite line comes when the two middle-age boys are told by their parents that they have to get jobs and move out, the free ride is over....

"This is like living in a prison! On the planet BULLSHIT! In the galaxy of sucking CAMEL DICK!"

Yeah, it is that good.

That is all.
