Another movie date with myself last night. This time, two Strawberry Kiwi Snapples (or is it Kiwi Strawberry?), a few chocolate-covered cashews, a little bit of Claudia's leftover pasta with beef, and about five butter cookies. The movies: American Beauty and Dogma.

The verdict:

American Beauty: Overall, scale of one to ten, ten being "OH MY GAWD, MY LIFE HAS BEEN CHANGED FOREVER BECAUSE THIS MOVIE IS SO AWESOME," I give it a seven, maybe a seven and a half. A portrayal of a typical dysfunctional family, although it failed in presentation. Dramatic, but not enough. Perhaps I've been desensitized. Or maybe I just thought that The Royal Tenenbaums did a better job of showcasing a family's quirks. It presented the material in a more endearing and warm way than this movie did. Anyhow, this movie had some interesting characters, although they could've been a bit more dynamic. But I'll admit, I did jump about two miles at the scene where the father gets shot.

Dogma: I couldn't even bring myself to finish it. Is it an insult to my Catholicism? Nah. I can take the jokes. Some of them actually amused me. "Remember: Even God has a sense of humor. Just look at the platypus. Thank you, and enjoy the show." Is it an insult to my intelligence? Yes. Probably one of the stupider movies I've ever attempted to watch. The comedy is stilted, overdone. Too much. Failed to keep my interest.

Oh, yeah. I also watched The Breakfast Club. Verdict on that one: Booooooooooooring. If this is what a cult classic is, then America truly is mindless. John Hughes, your movies blow.

Up for tonight: Lost in Translation. Not a big fan of Bill Murray, but I'm trying to keep an open mind.

God bless free movie rentals at the campus library. And God bless my professors this quarter for not leaving me too much homework so that I may continue taking myself on movie dates.

I've also decided that I don't really like Napoleon Dynamite any more. I don't know. Maybe it did just get old?

Or maybe now every movie I watch is compared to The Royal Tenenbaums. Something like that.
