JANETTE- We're not really strangers anymore...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:Mark turns to her again as if pleading:
MARK- You don't know what you're getting yourself into. :He waits for her to respond but she just continues to look at him intently: Well.....she said we weren't in love anymore...seven years! Then one morning she wakes up and decides we're not in love. And that was it. She was gone.
JANETTE- :concerned: But you still love her??
MARK- :leans back into his seat: I don't know...maybe. Maybe we were never in love to begin with...maybe we were just too afraid of being alone.
JANETTE- You don't mean that - you can't be with someone that long and not even love them.
MARK- We were in love with the IDEA of love. She could have been anyone. :long pause, he sighs: It should have been over a long time ago. Maybe it never should have started. It was either her or a hundred other women who wouldn't mean anything. At least it felt familiar. But it wasn't really commitment that kept us together, it was the fact that anything else seemed like too much effort.
JANETTE- But isnt that what love is about? Putting in the effort?
MARK- Eaxactly. Thats why it was never love. We were both just....there. I'm not saying I didn't care about her, I did. But it was just so empty.
JANETTE- So this is a good thing?
MARK- Yeah.....I guess.
JANETTE- Then why so blue?
MARK- :sits forward, long pause: Because I didn't just loose HER. It's everything...
JANETTE- What do you mean?
MARK- Well it's like I said- she could have been anyone. What if the kind of love we want to believe in just doesn't exist? What if its just about finding SOMEONE to keep you from being lonely for a while? I didn't lose a lover. I lost love.
JANETTE- :leans in slightly: You don't really believe that.
MARK- I don't believe in anything anymore.
JANETTE- Sure you do. You believe in the general goodness of people.
MARK- What makes you say that?
JANETTE- Why else would you open up with a stranger at a bus stop?
MARK- :smiles slightly: I thought you said we weren't really strangers anymore? :she smiles back slightly embarassed- long pause: What kind of person sits at bus stop all day listening to the ranting of a fool?

to be continued...
