Damn, this is interesting...
If you guys want to see a quick snapshot of my hometown in the early '80s, watch Court TV tonight at 12 Eastern for the replay of The Investigators. They have a profile tonight of an event that terrified me when I was a kid; when the Briley Brothers gang and some other inmates broke out of death row in Virginia and split into bands, one of which went south across the border into North Carolina and hid out in and around Warren County for a time.
It's amazing to see all the details of how they managed to bust out and run. I remember few of the finer points of what happened, other than the local and national news descending upon the town to film and interview anything on two legs that moved, everyone with a gun in the community either riding with it for protection or going out to the woods with it in vigilante posses hoping to get a chance to capture the escapees, news of sightings and rumors of sightings spreading virally in the community, and all the parents in the area freaking out and not letting any of us kids go outside. My world was no bigger than Warren County, and it seemed as if the closest temporal things to demons had been unleashed there and the whole world was losing its mind in panic.
Another amazing thing is my realization of just how frightened I really was then and how that visceral fear has hibernated in my mind for so long. When they showed the escapee's mugshots in this documentary I caught a chill and my stomach knotted up, all these years later.
