[ Movies ] GI Joe

The coolest thing about this movie is the thing you're probably not going to notice unless you're a geek.

So there's this photography technique ( or more properly, type of lens ) called ' tilt shift' that has this sort of nifty effect of making things look like miniatures / toys. It's a sort of cute technique that you can either abuse or do cool things with, and basically involves some smooshing and blurring and you can fake it on your computer. And at some point during the opening sequences in GI Joe, you might notice that the screen looks a little strange and blurred and if you're a geek you'll go " Oh! I think they tried to use a tilt-shift technique here, to make it look like these flying helicopters are toys because, y'know, it's based on toys! "

Or maybe you're just imagining things. But really, that's the best part of the movie. The rest of it is pointless explosions, technology, fight scenes, ninjas ( okay, the ninjas aren't pointless... ), flashbacks, and the occasional cobra snake. And yes it's sort of cool technology, and there's certainly a lot of explosions, but Oscar material this is not.

But hey, if you just want to watch Ninjas, go for it.

The plot ( what little there is ) drags. The plot holes gape. The stupidity makes you gasp. At some point a ninja takes off his shirt for no good reason ( unless it's to reveal that somehow, cuts that he just received 30 seconds ago are totally bloodless but the cut he's about to receive will splurt blood for you ).

Really, it's not worth the money. Buy it from the clearance rack in a few months.
