So, our bus transit has walked off the job this morning, right in the middle of a snow storm!
I have tried for a week to organize a carpool but none of my friends live near me. None of my co-workers live near by. I have no car. What did I do today? I was forced to book it off. I am lucky because my office is very flexible and understands completely. I have about 37 hours banked in OT so I am technically not losing any vacation days.
what about the students that need to get to exams?
What about the senior citizens, that are stuck in their homes now for god knows how long? What if someone needs to get to a dentist/doctor's appoinment?
What if there is an emergency and ambulances/cop car/fire truck cannot get through because there is a major traffic jam? I heard nothing was moving on the highway today for almost 4 hours. Oh and on top of that, those damn picketers (OC drivers I think) decided to take over city hall and block off traffic DOWNTOWN with their stupid pickets. Gee, thanks for that.
And all this? Because the Union representing OC transpo drivers, want a 7% wage increase, more sick days and do their own scheduling.
So, you want to hold the city hostage, cost people their JOBS, their health or their education because you want more money and better scheduling? I understand the city of Ottawa sucks ass right now and the mayor is delusional but that does not mean us citizens have to suffer.
Get this, the city's contingency plan to help commuters:
- Take a cab (okay. Give me 50$ a day and I'll call the damn cab)
- Take your bike to work (OHHH so it's suddenly ok to ride 10 kms in snow and ice on my imaginary bycile? THANK YOU MAYOR I DIDN'T EVEN THINK OF THAT)
- Walk to work (sure no problem. Not only will I cross the transitway illegally once or twice, but I'll get a fine for doing so and arrive at work 3 hours later! great)
- Carpool (well thats good, if you have that option - I just spent 2 days looking online and finally found someone to drive me this week)
So basically if you dont live close to work, and dont have anyone to carpool with, you are basically fucked. I was lucky but I spent all day today searching carpool sites. It was very frustrating.
I also have a hockey game Senators vs. Dallas on Dec 20th. Here is to hoping that the strike will be over by then, otherwise i lose on 60$
