....I haven't been good about posting. So, here are some things:
--I'm displeased about our lack of winter.
--Staying around home for the holidays was nice. Had a museum day on Xmas eve with
caviecub, and then another on New Year's eve with my brother Tad and his daughter Kate. The Ai Weiwei exhibit at the Hirshhorn is fantastic. I need to go again.
--I have managed to be really bad about seeing the movies I was so excited about. We saw Les Miz at Christmas, but otherwise, nothing. No Hobbit, although I may have to remedy that soon. My issue with The Hobbit going in is that this is a book that is about half the length of each of the other three. How can they make it into just as much movie?
--So, I mentioned something in a vague way in one of my last posts, and I'm tempted to be vague again, but I think I'll just say it. In the past year I've had some ....issues, and in dealing with them, I realized that I regretted giving up on the music thing, and I started practicing more, and remembering how much I loved playing and teaching. I never did finish my doctorate at Michigan State (which is yes, lame), so I applied to start it over (starting next fall) at University of Maryland back in December. The problem? They do everything very early in the music school there, and my audition is tomorrow. Eek. As per usual, I was overly ambitious in my music selections; they require a movement from a classical period concerto, and then enough music to fill an hour. More or less a recital's worth of music, although some of it can be orchestral excerpts. So, I did Weber's 2nd Concerto (the whole thing, because why not?), Joan Tower's Wings, and the Nielsen Concerto for the recital-ish stuff, and then a few orchestral excerpts. Practicing has been going well, and I think I'm close to being at a point where I won't humiliate myself, but it suuuuuure would be nice to have another week or so.
Of course, I'd be saying this next week too.
And on that note, I think I might go get a haircut. And then practice more.
