Heh. I've had this post summarizing my weekend open for the last three days. I should, uh- I should probably post it soon, despite it's slightly teal deer proportions.
FRIDAY
Went to
the Spoon concert with
shrift. I drove up to Chicago after work, and despite being a little late due to traffic, we managed to snag a pretty good spot, standing near the stage. During the evening, we got to battle some underage kids being obnoxious and entitled, and getting smacked down for it, which was very satisfying, and the most adorably enthusiastic kid I've ever seen stood next to me, and clearly enjoyed the hell out of the entire night.
The opening act was
White Rabbits, a smattering of boys from NYC, and OMG, they were adorable. I kept telling
shrift I wanted to smish them and put them in my pocket and take them with me. They were incredibly high-energy and sounded great (despite most of the songs sounding vaguely the same, but I cut them slack because they're young and have time to mature. They also have two drummers (!) who were clearly having a blast on stage which was fun to watch.
Next on stage was
The Walkmen. Um. I am not as familiar with this band, and -- I feel guilty saying this -- I nearly fell asleep during their set. I don't know if it was the fact that I was pretty tired already, or the way the band themselves looked bored, or a combination of the two, but MAN. I honestly had to struggle to keep upright. Definitely the weak spot in the evening, IMO.
Finally, it was time for
Spoon. I haven't seen them since Lolla a couple years back, and they have a new bassist now, but he's equally as cute as Zarbo, so I allowed it. They sounded fucking awesome, playing a great mix of old and new (including a couple songs I assume are either in the works for another album, or covers I just didn't recognize). Once again, however, I felt terrible, because by the time their set was winding down, I was ready to pack it in. In fact, I think I came close to fainting at one point, but I held it together since it was so close to over. Thankfully, there was only one encore!
Sadly, I think I have to admit that I am too old for this working-eight-hours-then-driving-two-hours-then-standing-around-four-hours thing. I just can't do it; next time, if there are more than two bands, I am SO finding a chair.
SATURDAY
The next morning,
celli (who graciously let me stumble into her place around midnight and crash) and I headed downtown to her office for her mandatory overtime. She very kindly set me up at an empty desk so I could surf the internet and she even snagged me some Chinese food from their giant spread, but... the strangest thing happened. I was playing
Chain Factor (like you do), and I felt SO NERVOUS. Like I was gonna get in TROUBLE, when I don't even work there! In fact, it felt even worse than when I play at my own job! I cannot even explain that, my friends.
Finally, I decided to just leave, and go see a movie or something instead. Our favorite movie theatre wasn't too far away, and I figured I'd just meet up with
celli,
deannie and
noelql for dinner after. It was a gorgeous spring day, so I walked, and just enjoyed being on the streets of Chicago, people-watching and soaking in the sunshine.
The movie I wound up seeing was
Leatherheads,, which was... um. Fine, I guess? It wasn't the greatest film I've ever seen, and it probably wasn't even in the top 50. It was funny(ish) in parts, and I was surprised at how much less I disliked Renée Zellweger, but really -- let's be honest? I went to this movie to see John Krasinski and George Clooney looking hot, which THEY TOTALLY DID, so I have no real complaints.
SUNDAY
Sunday mornings in Chicago mean fangirl brunchtimes, and we went to my very favorite diner! Yay! It was
celli,
taraljc,
pipsqueaky,
fan_eunice and me, and I can't even tell you what all we talked about, except that I'm fairly sure it was very fannish and likely inappropriate; there were even two spit-takes (only one of which was me, thank you)! I had managed to get my hands on a copy of the Doctor Who premiere (as well as Torchwood finale [I don't want to talk about it] and the Battlestar premiere [GLEE!!]) the night before, so there clearly needed to be Doctor talk. ♥
After brunch, we sadly parted ways with Pips and headed back to Tara's, where there was lots (LOTS) more fangirl goodness. Topics covered included: The Doctor, the series four premiere, David Tennant (and his freckles), Martha Jones (and her ridiculously sexiness), Gareth David-Lloyd (and his hotness and/or relative resemblance to polar bear cubs), EPIC badfics and some stories/vids that may or may not reach completion. I am hopeful that having two people looking forward to a story will help prompt me to, um, write it.
Plus, Tara sent me home with a couple discs of Tennant yumminess, and Celli loaned me
Hotel Babylon, so my free time is pretty much spoken for, I guess?
(As a side note: while we were discussing GDL, my brain finally made a connection that had been dancing at the periphery for weeks, but had never quite clicked until now.
I later shared my revelation with
scrunchy:
me: BTW, I finally figured out what Gareth David-Lloyd sounds like when he sings.
scrunchy: Badger in a food processor!
me: No, but you're close!
me: Glenn Danzig, singing The Doors!
scrunchy: AHAHAHAHAHAH
me: SRSLY. i couldn't remember the dude's name for the longest time, and then this weekend, it came to me
me: And I was sad.
scrunchy: *dies *
scrunchy: That is totally valid.
me: Dude. Even Wikipedia is trying to convince Gareth that it's somehow okay, when it is clearly NOT: Danzig is an American heavy metal band that fuses dark lyrics and imagery with blues-inspired hard rock.
me: Please note, baby Welshman: blues, and "blues-inspired hard rock" are VERY DIFFERENT.
scrunchy: Wooo-hoooord.
)
TODAY
I was bored at work on Monday, and so I (with nary a shred of guilt, wtf?) gave myself
a new LJ layout! There... that should last about a week or two. *g*
I feel it's important to tell you all that I might be developing a small crush on Simon Amstell. Just... putting that out there. *cough*
ALSO!! While hanging out with the wonderous fangirls @ Tara's on Sunday, I was introduced to the new big shiny happyplace of love in my life (apart from The Doctor and BSG):
Being Human!! YOU GUYS. I am SO completely smitten with George, and Mitchell is basically sex personified, and Annie is just the most adorable EVAH, and the OT3 potential is ENOURMOUS, and AUGH I love this show so much! I really really hope BBC picks it up, because I have already made a fanmix (which I hope to be sharing soon), and I joined a LIMS, and have conceived of about a ZILLION plausible crossovers, and.. and... OMG. *flails* You all really must watch, just so I have people to share the glee! ♥ ♥ ♥
