At the risk of sounding stupid and uninformed...can I ask what BNF's are? I keep seeing all this stuff on my friendslist about it/them, and I honestly have no idea what is going on.
Someone who is so active in fandom that their name becomes well-known in fan circles, to the point that sometimes other fans want their autographs or pay their way as guest speakers. A term originally native to conventions and other traditional fan gatherings, it has appeared online and now takes on a negative connotation of "arrogant and self-important." A step lower on the totem pole is the WKF (Well-Known Fan) -- Lord knows who makes the distinction. Usually abbreviated to BNF. Also called a superfan.
In my experience, the "BNF" label has taken on an extrenely negative connotation, with hints of pretension and spoiled fannish entitlement, and as such, most people want to avoid becoming a "BNF" at all costs.
Haha, I did notice that! I got the idea, but I still couldn't figure out what it stood for!
What is the recent deal with the SPN fandom? People are complaining about comments or something? I really don't know much...sorry if I'm bugging you with questions.
The same old complaint that usually makes the rounds in every fandom (usually more than once) about BNFs getting too many comments on their posts from ass-kissing fangirls, whether they deserve it or not, and new, unknown fans getting ignored despite any talent or value they have for the community at large, and how it's all just terribly unfair, and the BNFs should not only make it their job to make sure the newbies feel welcome and lauded at all times, but everyone else should just stop commenting on and/or reccing things by BNFs altogether.
Seriously, this argument comes around in basically every fandom I've seen at least once a year. It's nothing new, except that this might be one of the first times it's come around since SPN really exploded in popularity.
I'm confused. :(((
