Canon: The Lion King
History: Shenzi and the other hyenas have had a bad relationship with the lions of Pride Rock right from their puppyhood, as they have been chased from the Pridelands countless times by Ahadi and his son Mufasa, both of whom have also - in the hyenas’ eyes - poked their noses in where they weren’t wanted to spoil the hyenas’ fun. Despite this, they befriended Mufasa’s younger brother back in the days when he was still known as Taka; Shenzi saw in this relationship a potential for power in the future, and for getting back at the King. It was Shenzi and her friends who advised Taka to try to discredit his brother, resulting in the wound that caused Taka to become known as Scar. She and the other hyenas have skulked at the edges of the Pridelands, in the desert and the elephant graveyard, for a long time, nursing their grudge against Mufasa and picking out a living where they could. Recently, Scar’s own fulfilment of his ambitions to be king have seemed to pull them up out of the dirt: now they live on Pride Rock itself, able to jeer at the lions they once feared, eating all they want where once they starved, and roaming free where once they were restricted.
Personality: Shenzi is very confident and fairly down-to-earth - unless things don't go her way, in which instance she tends to come down with a case of sour grapes. She isn't good at leading and doesn't like being led. She's also less clever and self-sufficient than she thinks she is, though she's a strong fighter, and fairly trustworthy as an ally, so long as there’s something in it for her. To summarize? If you befriend her, she’ll tolerate you. If you awe her, she’ll bask in your reflected glory. If you scare her, she’ll obey you. If you scratch her back, she’ll scratch yours. And if you betray her, she’ll make sure you get it in the neck.
Why do you want to play this character?: Well, the hyenas are brilliant, both funny and menacing in equal measure. Not to mention that I love to roleplay both morally ambiguous characters and secondary or minor characters - and Shenzi is both! Score!
Entrance Post: Luxury!
Shenzi lounges on a wide, sun-baked rock, cleaning her teeth with the shard of an antelope’s rib, and feeling her stomach strain and ache with the weight of all the meat. Just below her, using a growth of moss as a pillow, Banzai lets fly an enormous belch.
“I don’t think I can eat for another week,” he groans, gazing up at the clouds with an expression of unfocused bliss.
“I ain’t gonna eat for a month,” returns Shenzi happily, ever the one to try to outdo him. “I didn’t know there was that much meat in the whole of Africa! Shows how greedy the lions are, keeping choice pickings like that to themselves all this time.”
Warm, content, comfy and sated: there isn’t anything Shenzi would change about this moment. And to think that every day will be like this, now that Scar is king!
The Powers that Be, who have always had a wicked sense of humour, choose this moment to swallow up the tranquil scene and pour out Shenzi onto a hard, chilly surface, with her back up against a crumbly precipice, and her front facing what she at first takes for the Elephant Graveyard, because nothing else she’s seen draws a parallel with the rundown, gloomy thing she finds herself in. Everything looks wrong and nothing smells right.
Cue one freaked-out hyena, lumbering upright, ears down, shivering and gaping at the street. She’s not snarling, yet, but dang those are still some impressive teeth.
