There goes my hero, watch him as he goes…

I’m not sure if anyone knows it yet, but I sold 99% of my comic book library. This was kind of something that needed to happen. It’s not like my books were my idol or anything, but there was something going on between me and the books…
For example…Josh and I had been through one year of Bible college together. We started in January of 2000, and went through December of that same year. At the close of the year I decided to discontinue my education at the Bible college as I had run out of money, didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, and wanted to spend more time with my girlfriend back home (all three of these things are listed in order of importance to me). Josh and I were driving all around town with 99% of his whole CD collection.

Side note: Josh had spent quite a long time finding all of these CDs. We had janitor jobs together during high school, and sometimes (when we had money) we would stop into the used CD shops after cleaning a few offices to try and complete some sort of endless SKA collection. Josh was a Mighty, Mighty, Boss Tones junkie, and those guys have like a million EPs.

Side note 2: During the two semesters at Bible college I worked at a used CD shop called “Disc-Go-Round” in the summer. The shop was located on the south-side of Des Moines, and it was the best job I’ve ever had. During the fall semester, the owner sold the shop to a few local guys, and they moved it to the east side, and changed the name to “ET exchange.” (months later the new management couldn’t keep the company afloat, and it is no longer in existence.)

Josh and I ended up at this east-side used CD shop, and I went in and sort of worked the manager up a bit by name-dropping my old manager at Disc-Go-Round. He thought I was cool, and Josh brought in the goods for him to look at to buy. Man, there were a lot of really good CDs in there. Do you ever go to a used book store, and when you look at some of the really good books, you just stare at them, and wonder how on earth anyone could sell something that cool? This is why. When Josh decided that he didn’t need these CDs any more he sold them. He needed some $$$ for presents that year, and he didn’t need this music in his life, so things just added up. He asked me before we went into the store if I wanted to buy any of it, and I had to tell him no, because I didn’t have any money at the time. I’m sort of glad I didn’t.

Josh used the money to buy everyone he knew a book by Brendan Manning, “The Ragamuffin Gospel.” It’s a powerful book that needs to be read by any professing Christian.

Fast forward to today. A bunch of my friends gave me a lot slack for selling my library. They used to (and still do) enjoy reading my books. I didn’t own a single comic, unless it was amazing to some degree. Now, I barely own any comics. I guess I pulled a Josh Furnal.

Now it looks like Josh is going to Italy in the spring. He graduates in December… well, he should, as it’s taken him five years to earn two degrees. He’ll be in Italy for a minimum of two years. I miss him all the time, and he’s only five hours away. I seriously don’t know what I’m going to do when he’s in Italy. I’m being VERY serious. I have leaned on him for tons of things. What am I going to do without him?

Chris DeWelt was here at CCCB all this week. Chris is Josh’s D-Group leader at Ozark, and he is very inspirational to Josh. It was good to talk with Chris, and hear that Josh has told him all of the crazy stories that Josh and I share. Like the one where I was accused of goosing this old lady at our home church!

I don’t pattern my life after Josh. In fact, Josh and I have lead two VERY different lives so far. But we’re still very close to each other. We both want to end up in the same place here on earth: serving God.

I want to see if I can be in Italy for a mission trip during spring break next semester. I want to see what Josh is going to be up to, and I want to sit with him, and encourage him, and have him encourage me.

Taco Kisses,
Tim
