Oracle Training! (warning: geek speak)

I'm sitting here in the swanky bloomington offices of Oracle, gettin' trained! ok, so it's not a big deal, I'm learning all about the Oracle Portal product. It seems to be ok as a CMS, but like everything I've seen from Oracle, a little clunky and a little overengineered. Not that I have a choice in the matter, I'll be implementing this sucker come hell or high water. Looks like I'll need to learn JSP as well, so I can build JSR-168 compliant portlets for it. That could be pretty fun (and lucrative!) but I'm worried that when I replace our current portal system, the users might revolt. We'll see.

The big advantage to doing something like this is just that it can scale much better, we can have one instance and manage portal websites for a bunch of different business units, and re-use some of the pieces. It'll integrate with Exchange, AD, Oracle, and whatever else I can connect to with SOAP or XML. I built the original TC Tech Portal in two and a half years or so. I re-built it in the past four months. How long will it take the third time in a new language and CMS?

ok, time to head back to class.
