One of my all time favourite songs is Baba O'Reilly by The Who. At first, I thought it was called 'Teenage Wasteland' because, well, that made sense. And DJs hardly ever give you the name of the song or the artist. I finally went through a number of songs by The Who when I had a Rhapsody subscription many years ago.
For this reason, I watched part of The Kennedy Center Honors that was on telly tonight. And I wasn't disappointed. William Petersen narrated a biographical piece on The Who, which made total sense given how Who Are You became popular again due to CSI.
And then the musicians came out.
Okay, I could totally have done without Joss Stone. Looking at Roger Daltrey, I think he could have done too. That's now two pieces I've heard her do that she's failed to do justice to. The first was a Janis Joplin tribute, and her co-singer Melissa Etheridge did a much, much better job.
The other female singer was an older woman I'd never heard of. I'm guessing her specialty is the blues, and she was fantastic.
Dave Grohl was fantastic doing the CSI theme! And he's grown his hair long again. I understand why he and Novoselic decided not to continue with Nirvana after Kurt Cobain's death, but he could have totally led the band. Foo Fighters wasn't bad either, though.
And then came Rob Thomas doing my favourite. Like Grohl, he kept things like Daltrey and Townsend. And I loved it. Having the NYPD and NYFD come out at the end to return the salute they received from The Who after 9/11 was powerful stuff. And you could tell they were proud to be there. Just as Daltrey and Townsend felt honoured to be honoured in such a way.
If I ever had to list my Top 10 favourite songs, Baba O'Reilly would be on it. Which begs the question...
Why don't I have a frellin' copy of it?!
