So there is a cricket competition between England and Australia. It happens every 18 months and has been going on for over 100 years. It is known as "The Ashes". There is a match on right now (since Friday).
So, there is an American girl on twitter who has called herself @theashes. She is not related to the match and knows nothing about the game. However people have confused her with the #theashes hash tag. The confusion spread, and now she is getting many replies, either by people genuinely making a mistake and others doing it for a joke.
Her early tweets were that of frustration eg:
theashes Ashes
@
@primosmee I am not a cricket match. Stop mentioning me and check profiles before you send messages. Its really annoying.
(repeated several times)
and
theashes Ashes
I AM NOT A FREAKING CRICKET MATCH!!! That means you @matywilson @zandertrego @thesummats @ atonyboffey @faz1988 and MORE
However later tweets suggests she may be seeing the funny side of it. Now there is a new hashtag going around #gettheashestotheashes (Get The Ashes to The Ashes), with people offering donations to give her a trip to Australia. I'm actually hopeful she does get to go, would just be amazing the power of twitter/humanity.
