I have no qualms with that at all. In fact, I work as an early interventionists with deaf and hard of hearing children. Almost half of my caseload are children with a cochlear implant or two. All were implanted at age one with at least one implant (some with two), and the ones who are now 2 1/2 ARE on level with language and doing great, but it's all thanks to the parents who part the hard work into making it work for their child.
The purpose of getting all that background information was to help those who I know read this to understand why I could understand speech two weeks later, whereas a child with no language will have a harder time COMPREHENDING speech. I already have language instilled in me, and the phonemic awareness to understand what is going on. I was wary of my audiologist when he said that I would start understanding speech and functioning better than I have been the past few years within a month or two. Goes to show, he was right. The technology is phenomenal, and I've seen what it can do with young children with my own eyes, but no one younger than a year old as Utah does not implant before that age. Not say it doesn't work for children younger than 1, only stating that I have not seen it with my own eyes as I have not had the opportunity to see it. I hope you didn't think I was saying children wouldn't benefit or anything negative. I'm all for implanting children if it's the right decision for the family :)
