Greetings! My name is Russell Banks. I was born born March 28, 1940 in Newton, Massachusetts. I have spent most of my life living in New England, Barnstead, New Hampshire to be exact.I grew up as the oldest of four children in a working class family. This has inspired many of my stories.
When I turned eighteen I packed my bags and headed off to college. This was a big deal for my family because I was the first to ever do so. I attended Colgate College but after only eight weeks I decided it wasn’t for me. I felt out of place amongst the wealthier students. After this experience, I decided I wanted to join Fidel Castro's revolutionary army in Cuba, however I was relatively broke. My funds took me to a trailer park in St. Petersburg Florida. While residing in Florida I took up many various jobs. I also started writing short fiction stories. Eventually I enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I ended up graduating Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation I held many random jobs such as plumbing, and as a shoe salesman and window trimmer. This was only to help pay the bills, my true love was writing.
My hard work has paid off. Today I am a published author. Over the past five decades I have published five short story collections, ten novels, and four poetry collections. These publishing’s include Cloudsplitter, Searching for Survivors, Family Life, Hamilton Stark, The New World, The Book of Jamaica, Trailerpark, The Relation of My Imprisonment, Continental Drift, Success Stories, Rule of the Bone and The Angel on the Roof which is a collection of thirty years of my short fiction. I have also contributed poems, stories, and essays to The Boston Globe Magazine, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Book Review, Esquire, and Harper’s.
Today I make my home in New York as a full time author. I have also taught at numerous colleges such as Emerson College, the University of New Hampshire, New England College, Columbia University, Sarah Lawrence College, New York University, and Princeton University.
