Other than being the source for the poppy seeds on my bagel, opiates and the hypnotic chorus in 'The Wizard of Oz', for me poppies are forever associated with the brave dead, the soldier's sacrifice, immortalized in the poem by John McCrae entitled "In Flanders Fields":
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
