Pansies were cultivated from the Viola family, genus Viola which includes both violets and johnny-jump-ups, known in literature famously as 'Heartsease'.
Pansies are single flowers with five petals rounded into what is referred to popularly as a 'face'. And thus the name "Pansy" is derived from the french word 'pensee', for thought, as the quiet little pansy face always seems lost in contemplation, nodding quietly to the passing world.
As for me, pansies remind me of pug dogs!
Redoute, the great botanical artist, his life's work devoted almost exclusively to roses painted pansies once!
And Georgia O'Keefe painted them twice!
Happy Birthday, dear friend!
