So, this is just me totally going to spaz out. Enjoy it, this is one of the first times I'm doing it on paper instead of just in my head.
Ok, so while reading the massive amounts of Star Trek fic out there, it began to hit me that every one of them commented in one way or another that Spock was hot to the touch. Which got me thinking; I have a northern mother and a sister that takes after her while I'm take after my southern dad in bady temp. My mum, used to colder winters, had a higher body temp, same as my sis and my dad and I both had lower than normal body temps and thrive in the summer. So, how is it that Spock, or vulcans in general, have such a high body temp when living on a planet that probably gives Death Valley a run for it's money? Wouldn't they literally boil in their skin?
So, the geek in me jumped around until I could get to my friend Google and promptly read anything that looked cannon and found this gem:
http://www.members.shaw.ca/selek/VULCAN_PHYSIOLOGY.htm , which was written more extensively in Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual, which is supported as Cannon, though there are some parts that are debatable, as happens within all cult like followings. Anywho, to my ecstatic fangirling way, it notes that average Vulcan body temperature to be 91 deg.s, give or take. This gave my thoroughly scientific side a rather nice girl-hard on.
To add to this, it would make more sense for Spock to reflect on his human companion's startling warmth rather then their relative coolness. :) Also, just to put a bit of brain to people who might stumble on this and think, oh, what does it matter if he is colder or warmer then his human companions? Well, if you have a higher body temp, then when it's cold they would be better equipped to handle it. Because they are already warm... yeah, exactly.
Unfortunately, I have no reference for a vulcan in cold temperatures; was there no cannon moment with this? Well, other then in Search for Spock, where they found kid!Spock in snow country. You can't really go on the reactions of a Vulcan who is in the midst of suppressing everything but her job and the reactions of a little untrained vulcan who looked at the trees the same way he looked at sintient beings, you know?
(Note: That icon is effing HOTT!!! If anyone can tell me where this poor brain addled person got it, I would love to... note it? Say it's not mine but this person's? I dunno, note it will work.)
Here be an add on! So, I got to reading it again and I noted that it says Vulcan veins are larger and closer to the surface to expel heat... which means they would be hotter to the touch then humans, because most of their 91 deg.s are right at the surface... so damn, there goes that.
