In 1769 a part of california was first developed with the building of the first presidio, when Governor Don Gaspar de Portola claimed "Alta California" as a territory of Spain.(engstrand) This same site is now know as Old Town, a preserved part of history and a state park. There were many buildings that affected this small town, some of them mystrios and some with lots of history. There are many people that have lived here, and that have shaped this small place. There is also a large change in how old town was used then and is used now. Old Town is a major part of San Diego, and history.
There are many buildings that have afected the wealth and prosperity of Old Town. The first buidings in Old Town started in mid-1821but not many showed up till 1822 because of the change over in spanish rule to mexican rule. The first brick house structure in california built in 1858 by Thomas Whalie. This house was used as a court house and a theater. The house is prosumed haunted because of a tragic accident that happened there.(Smythe) The first public school named mason street school was built in 1865. This shcool was free and had a water buket and dipear for plumbing and a wood stove for heating.(Nelson) La Casa de bandini was built in 1829 by Juan Bandini. This house was were he lived till he was forced to sell it to John Steeley due to finacial losses. John Steeley added a second story and made it into a hotel named the Cosmopitan. He also made the steeley stable which made a place for his costumers to keep there houreses.(Nelson) The colorado house was built by Cave Johnson Couts in 1851. This was used as a hotel and accross from his good friend Juan Bandini.(Nelson) There were others but these changed history.
The people of Old town are what got it started and made it prosperios through the years. It started with the first man to actually own a residence there his name was Jose Maria Estudillo. He was the commander of the presido and he died in 1830 before his house was built and left his things to his son. His son was named Jose Antonio Estudillo he helped old town prosper by collecting revenue and spending it in the town he died in 1852.(Ellsworth) A man who made Old Town the center of attetion named John steeley who made a mail line from San Diego to Los Angeles. Seeley and his partner, Charles Wright, began running the first daily stage and mail between San Diego and Los Angeles from their stage office at the Cosmopolitan Hotel which was early owned by Juan Bandini. They ran this business till 1877 when the railroad put them out of business.(Ellsworth) Another significant person that lived in Old Town was named Thomas Whaley he came to California because of a gold rush in 1849. This mans ingenios made him come up with the first burnt bricks.This gave him an idea to build in San Diego then he made some of the first brick buildings which still stand today. John left in 1859 and joined politics, but left a part of him behind.(Ellsworth) These people are part of history and still live on in the buildings and things they left behind.
Old Town is now a place for where people can see how the past was. Old Town is now a state park which is used for many events in are society. There are many muesems and shows that are on display. The Whaley House is now a hounted house which people come to see daily. Le Casa de Bandini is now a resturant and has its orginal name again. The Colorado House burned in 1872. It was reconstructed in 1992 and now houses the Wells Fargo Museum. The Steeley Stable is now a muesem for many western items and old carrieges. Mason street school is now a muesem and a school on history in that time era. La casa de estudillo which now has many shops and resturants in it. These places were reserved as a state park in 1969 and is still one of the most major attractions in San Diego.(Old Town Park)
Old Town has not only affected but changed history for the good and the bad. The people that lived here shaped a culture that would be here for a very long time. The buildings that are there remind of what used to be. Old Town is a part of history that will be around for ever because people will want to keep those memories alive. This place is one of the most influietial places in all of San Diego. Old Town is a major part in San Diego, not only for what has started here but that will end here too.
