The Price

We knew what would happen
Because we’d seen it in our dreams.
The sky would not fall
As the ancient scholars believed,
But it would expand.
It would swell so far and wide
That we’d be pushed to the ends of the universe,
Pinned against the starry walls of time.
And in time,
We would see that we were trapped.
We would learn:
Heaven cannot be found in the sky,
But beyond it.
And there was so much sky,
How could we pass through it?
Now we wait below,
Our heads tilted up to the solid wall.
We stand here like turkeys in the rain.
Wondering.
Pondering.
Can God still see us?
