Here's my life for the past 2 months that I haven't shared with anyone that I don't associate with daily:
I finished my research: an assessment of the competency of local bacteria flora as it correlates to soil characteristics.
I entered:
1. Regional Science Fair
and won 2nd in my category, and therefore went to the
2. State Science Fair
in Raleigh and won honorable mention in my category and 50$ from the army for excellence.
3. Junior Science and Humanities Symposium
didn't win, but went whitewater rafting. Cold, but worth it.
4. The BioGENEius Award
and won state finalist and a position in
5. The Regional BioGENEius Award
which is in Atlanta in two weeks. I get to tour the CDC! If I advance, I get an (allexpensespaid) trip to San Diego for Nationals.
Waddell's SMART Team (Students Modeling A Research Project) finished our research on the androgen receptor and tetrahydragestrinone. On the 19th we presented our information for a panel of professors at UNCCharlotte. We just got back a four day stint in Boston where we finally got our protein models and where we presented at the NSTA (National Science Teacher's Association). UNCC's precollege program presented too, but we were better, duh. We got to wander around NSTA, where I got asked about a thousand times what I taught. I finally gave up explaining why I was there as a high school student and started telling people I taught high school biology. I got free stuff.
I also got a Harvard shotglass while I was there.
From the presentation at UNCCharlotte, I get to pick a professor to research under this summer. I think I'm going to go with Piller, who's researching plant biotechnology and edible vaccine development, or Hudson, who's researching Staph invasions of osteoblasts.
Speaking of Harvard, I got wait-listed from Chapel Hill, so I think I'm going to Wilmington. I'm applying for their honors program, and going to visit on spring break on the way to or from the beach to make sure I'm ok with being there, what with my only memory of Wilmington involving battleships and the paralysis of grandpa.
On my to-do list:
Finish Love in the Time of Cholera
Write a nine page paper on it by Tuesday
Finish two more acts of King Lear by Tuesday
Age of Isms essay
Like 5 online quizzes I owe Ms. Webber
Graduation invitations
Make a new poster for Atlanta
Develop film from Boston
And, I had all A's last semester, but I'm still only 4th in the class. Call me crazy, but that's not satisfying when I was third last year. I blame my psycho online teacher that stopped checking her email in the middle of the class and giving me a D. If nothing else, I'll be top 5, and I'll graduate.
How hard can it be? All I need to graduate is English and Statistics.
I know all that may have sounded like I'm just bragging on myself, and while I am just a little, it was more to remind myself what I'm doing with my life right now, that it'll pay off, and that Chapel Hill is crazy for not accepting me because I'm an average white girl going for their most common major with one D on her record.
