So, I spent way too much time reading this. I don't know why I invested so much time. I don't know any of the people involved in the events described, and I don't share the major interest that connects all the players in this story

i spent, like, the ENTIRE DAY at work reading this thing. and i also didn't know anything about the situation or have reason to care (i mean, i've basically been lurking around HP fandom for that long and have been reading fandom_wank since the beginning, but see key word "lurking" there and also, you know, i'm not CRAZY.)
your last paragraph is so perfect in every way (except for "cannon" instead of "canon")! you totally know the lingo. loser.
Oh, snap! I'll fix that "cannon" thing. I think I was thinking of the Douglas Cannon!
I only know half of those terms from reading the epic today. And I'm still unsure about some. (If you could tell me what "TL;DR" means, or if someone says something like "Pimp!Dumbledore," or what "pwning" is, I'd be grateful! I couldn't figure those out myself.) I fully admit to being a loser, though.
tl;dr is "too long; didn't read" (now that i'm in research mode, i can tell you that it orginated on SomethingAwful.com (and is not fandom-specific, just internet)
pimp!dumbledore is... well, here: "When used between a modifier and a name, is just a cute way of connecting the two concepts. Ie. amused!Viggo, sulking!Egon." (source: http://www.subreality.com/glossary/terms.htm) i'm trying to figure out the origin, but since the f_w wiki seems to be down right now, not finding much.
"pwned" means "owned" as in "i win, you lose" and it's a gamer thing, i believe, that is mostly used ironically by, you know, anyone with a brain.
Fuck that, man, I'm starting a Marisa/McFeez slash fic. If I really work hard, maybe everyone will be pissed off with each other at the FeeBQh in 3D.
I read some of this stuff last year when the sixth HP book came out, and quickly realized it was FAR TOO CRAZY for me. As in, I enjoy the Harry Potter books a lot, and yet I don't really have an opinion on who Harry shags. I actually want to know who JK Rowling thinks Harry should shag! And if he ends up in a Harold and Maude-esque situation with McGonagall, I'm totally okay with that.
Roommate and I were talking about psychotic Veronica Mars fans the other day, the ones who swore on the Television Without Pity message boards that they'd stop watching the show because their favorite character was "assassinated" in the second season finale, and we came to the conclusion that while we do (casually) create secret gay subplots for the casts of CSI and Without a Trace, we do know that what we're doing is ridiculous, and more importantly, imaginary.
we do know that what we're doing is ridiculous, and more importantly, imaginary.
That's the whole thing I can't get over. If you want to write/read this stuff, fine, it's your time. But if you get actually angry at people because they support *fictional* relationships that you don't, then something is wrong. And if you fake a stalker that hates your fan fiction to get attention--and it works--then something is really wrong.
Unless it's about me and McFeez. Then all bets are off!

... I would totally do my PhD on these people!! I've only ever seen one critical study of fanfic-- it is way outdated, and it is HIGH TIME someone wrote a dissertation on it.
Maybe when I'm done with the religion stuff.
Spencer!who still doesn't get how to use the exclamation point. Isn't the example given in the definition a usage other than that described?
Ok, after a cursory glance at this page (which has appeared elsewhere on my Friends list, so it's officially An Internet Thing), I have no idea what's going on. Can you summarize in a few sentences? I understand that there is a thing called fan-fiction, but I don't get what people are doing.
And much Roommate and I try to find ridiculous homoerotic subtext in the tv shows we watch, somehow the shows always insist on going one better and un-subbing the text.
I can try to summarize. (For the record, I found it from your friends list, so that might make it less of an Internet thing.)
Basically, the site was a huge epic about how this one person, MsScribe, rose through the ranks of fan fiction fame "All About Eve"-style. She started out by writing fanfic, and creating fake accounts (they called them "sockpuppets") to praise it. Then she made "sockpuppets" that insulted and "stalked" her to garner sympathy and attention. Then she used a series of "sockpuppets" to alternately exacerbate tensions that already existed in the Harry Potter fan fiction community and make herself look even better. She was eventually accepted into the fandom's "inner circle" of higher-ups, so apparently it's a big deal that pretty much every bit of drama that happened in the community over the past six years can be traced back to this one person and her many aliases. The lengthy account has many delicious examples of bitchery.
Why I cared enough to read the whole thing, though, is unexplainable.
