Cruisin' Together: Italy

Nov 11, 2012 07:30

We booked our airfare through the cruise, and they had us flying out on Tuesday, getting into Rome on Wednesday, barely spending a couple of hours in the city, and heading to the boat. It took some effort, but we decided it was worth it to change our flight to Sunday so we could actually spend some time in Rome. It's a good thing we did -- if we hadn't, Sandy would have made us miss the whole thing. Even on Sunday, it was a nail-biter, with flights getting canceled around us as we waited for our (delayed) plane to come in, get cleaned, and leave again. They shut down the subway while we were waiting in the airport. The wind made it so JFK was only using one runway, causing backups. With each additional delay, I thought we'd finally reach a point where the weather got so bad that we couldn't take off. In the end, the delays were just delays and we made it out of New York.
I love Rome. It's a great city. Everything is walkable, and the subway is super easy to navigate. (Our hotel was right near Termini, so no matter how far afield we wadered during the day we could always get back at night.) We ate pasta and gelato. We only had one small coin to throw into the Trevi Fountain when we were there, so I let Jesse do it because he's never done it before. I hope he brings me with him when he returns!

For some reason, the Vatican had this orb sitting in a courtyard. I loved it!

A lot of people didn't climb to the top of the Spanish Steps, so they missed out on this view.
