For all the Mother Lovers out there...

After recovering from nerding out at Star Trek (which, as predicted in the previous post, was 100% fun), I beamed up to the WC for two days of uninterrupted family time. We suited up for a wedding, then dressed it down for Mother's Day. Lessons learned:

*You can't leave any clothes, jewelry, shoes, or anything else lying around in front of my family, because inevitably someone will try them on--and everyone else will weigh in with their opinion on whether or not it looks good. And no two opinions will agree.

*The verdict seems to be mixed about if my sister, mom, and I look alike. One person will say that my sister and I look like each other but not my mom, another will say that we all look alike, and still others would say they wouldn't guess that we're all related. For the record, the correct answer is: My mom and I look alike. My sister and father look alike. And that's not just because my sister and I dye our hair in different directions on the color spectrum.

*You can put my mom in a room with 100 strangers and she'll come out knowing who everyone is, how they're all related to each other, and what their birthdays are. My sister and I usually hang back and let her do the detective work, and get the highlights later on.

*My mom is also awesome because what she wants to do most on Mother's Day is stay home and order Chinese food. This is very similar to what we did on Christmas.

*Another advantage: She can't really sit still (sorry Mom, but you know it's true), so she also cleans up after everybody. Some would say that's mean, and we should step in and clean up before she does. But that wouldn't actually make her happy, since she'd have nothing to not-sit-still about and would wind up doing something like, say, rummaging through the papers in the room I stayed in and discovering the receipt for her Mother's Day present before we could give it to her and ruining the surprise.

*Fusing the two ends of my weekend: If my family were Star Trek characters, I would be Spock, because he worries the most. (Or at least speaking the plain truth in a logical manner often sounds like worrying to me: "This plan only has a four percent chance of working, guys.") My sister would be Kirk, because she often acts on impulse and goes with her gut, no matter what other people tell her to do. My mom would be the person who beams down to a new planet and heads straight for the gift shop.

*Who wouldn't love to have daughters like these?
