I found the world so new.

Phew! This was an extended Thursday-to-Monday weekend, and almost every second of it was packed. Here's what I've been busying myself with these days:

13
I don't care what old-man Ben Brantley says, it was adorable. Actually, I agree with him that the characters were a little stock. But I thought the story did a good job of not sugar coating how mean 13-year-olds are, and the music was pretty good, and on the whole I really like it.

Beck & MGMT
I'm not charmed by the neighborhood of Inwood, but oh man is the United Palace Theater gorgeous. MGMT disappointed me a little-turns out the only songs of theirs I like are the two I already knew, and the rest sound like you should be playing Dungeons & Dragons to them-so I'm a bad Wes alum. Beck was much better, and his band brought a hard-rock sound to even his disco party songs, which was cool. I loved their version of "Nicotine & Gravy."

Upstate Wedding
So Jesse was asked to quasi-DJ this wedding, which makes me the DJ Chauffeur. (Hooray foliage!) Yet, even though I had only met the bride and groom a couple times (maybe exactly twice, at Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2), it was still a fun weekend. Perhaps that's because of this whole no-professional-band-or-DJ thing. Since the couple chose the entirety of the playlist, it had the best wedding music of any wedding I've ever been to. There was no "Celebration" or "We Are Family." And, seriously, there was a five- or six-song run that was my dream wedding playlist. (Oh, playlist six, I will have dreams about you!) I learned a few things about wedding music, including:

*Even if only a couple of people know the Avalanches, those people will really boogie down when they come on.

*Boys really like the song "Canned Heat" by Jamiroquai.

*It's good to play "Wanted: Dead or Alive" when people are drunk.

*Turns out, John Lee is a real person. Okay, that had nothing to do with music, but it was a lesson learned.

On top of all of that, I found time to review My Own Worst Enemy for PopMatters, announce my category for the (other) CD club I'm in (where I just got called out for using Ben Lee twice), and completely fuck up calling my grandmother to wish her a happy birthday. So it was busy.

Besides snubbing Grandma, the only other bad thing about this weekend was that I ate like a pig. Jesse's family took us out for multiple meals (and I had my first trip to the Cheesecake Factory). It was fun hanging out with them, but everything I ate was fried. Then the wedding was Oktoberfest-themed, so there was lots of delicious sausage around. How can you say no to sausage?

Well, good eating habits start today. Except…there's no way I'm cooking. It's my day off.
