The less she knows, the less she can repeat.

Apparently, it doesn't take much to have me relapse into an old obsession. Just one little reminder and I'm back to monomania.

What's strange is that, at the moment, I'm fixated on two songs, and I've been unable to find free downloads of EITHER of them. The Hype Machine has failed me! The Internets have let me down! Woe! WOE!

What's not strange is that both songs are from the bands that I've seen most recently in concert: Art Brut and the Hold Steady. Remember how awesome I thought that concert was? Now, the whole world can read about how awesome I thought that concert was. I reviewed the gig for the website of Beyond Race Magazine (Flavor of the Week, Nov. 26). I hope I get to do more of these in the future, but my concert schedule is looking a little bare right now. I wish I had gotten started with them just a couple weeks before I did, because I probably would have been able to review the Weakerthans' and the New Pornographers' shows. Now I hope the people at Beyond Race Magazine don’t forget about me during my dry spell.

Anyway, back to the songs. The Hold Steady broke out some new songs at the concert. They were all pretty good (especially "Lord, I've Been Discouraged" and "Stay Positive"), but the one that I really liked best was "Ask Her for Some Adderall." Even just from the title, you can tell that it's everything a Hold Steady song is supposed to be. ("And if she asks just tell her that we opened for the Stones. It's her favorite band except for the Ramones!") It kills me that this isn't floating around the Internet ether since it's widely recorded for You Tube. Oh well. At least I get to listen to it there. (And you should, too.)

I'm not surprised that the Art Brut song I like isn't widely distributed yet. It just came out about three days ago-and it's a Christmas song. (You thought you were done with reading about my love of Christmas-ha!) Like all of Art Brut's songs, "Christmas Number One" is about how they want to be really, really popular and get on Top of the Pops. (Top of the Pops!) Unfortunately, Top of the Pops is off the air except for their yearly Christmas special. Hence, the new holiday song. If they succeed, the whole thing will be kind of meta. They'll be on Top of the Pops playing a song about how they wrote a quickie holiday tune and threw some sleigh bells on it so they could play it on Top of the Pops. Even if they don't get on the show, the song is still more honest than most holiday songs (they totally pull the curtain back on the fact that most holiday albums are recorded in August), and it's actually really good! I'm not going to pay 79-pence for a download, so I keep going back to the "Black Arts" (Black Box Recorder + Art Brut) MySpace page to listen to it. (And you should, too.)

Top of the Pops!

christmas, pimp my writing, the hold steady, music, art brut, live music
