[apharsites; ooc] The Monk Manifesto & History, thus far.

Aug 27, 2006 23:24

Because Heather is bored and needs something to do!

Monk was brought into the Apharverse in February of this year. I never really made an entry post for him, I just kind of said "OK, Monk's been here for a while and now he's being social." Now, I didn't stop to consider it at the time, but looking back on it, I should have realized: putting a man like Monk into such an environment would, inevitably, force him to change in some ways. In a land full of death and decay and germs and dirt, Monk would not have survived if he had not adapted. Now, Monk is a smart, smart man - as is established in canon - and quickly came to realize that if he did not adjust to his new environment, he'd be screwed five ways from Sunday. So, he adapted.

Over time, he became more social. A minor change, as canon!Monk didn't exactly avoid conversation. However, some major changes took place in the detective over time, ultimately changing who he is as a person. The most notable change would be that regarding his OCD. It's still there and still quite pronounced, but it's not as debilitating as it once was. In fact, it's now more of a gift than a curse than it ever was before. In the Apharverse, there isn't a lot of crime, and there certainly aren't a lot of murders, and that's another thing that forced change upon Monk: he had to focus his skills on something else.

Now, he works not only as the occasional detective, but as a protector.

He's had quite a few adventures thus far in his new home. Most notably is his conflict with Alex Krycek (
ratb0y, who is also a pup of mine) which I will now explain in depth:

Ever since Krycek arrived at the apartments from the farm, Monk knew something was up. He didn't like the way Krycek would just sit around and watch everyone without actually talking. Of course, our detective was right in being suspicious because as it turns out, Mr. Krycek was working for Harth all along. Krycek realized that Monk knew this, and he couldn't exactly do much about it except give him a swift punch, a threat, and run from the apartments back to Harth with his tail between his legs. With that, he swore to get back at Monk for destroying his plans. Time passed, and eventually, Krycek was Turned. Now that he had strength and power, he could get the revenge he so badly wanted! He knew Monk would wander into the city, and he was waiting for him, and when the two finally crossed paths again there was a Big Fight and somehow, someway, Monk won. (With the help of Krauser, of course.)

Again, Krycek ran off with his tail between his legs and swore revenge. Monk is now completely paranoid, has frequent nightmares, and tries to not leave the building unless he has to. He went to Johnny after his worst nightmare asking for help; Johnny, after touching Monk, had a vision of Krycek's last confrontation with the detective. It ended with someone dying, and Monk is convinced that he's going to be the one to go. He will, however, try his best to take Krycek down when the time comes. (Basically, he equates Krycek with the man who killed Trudy.)

So that's that.

Other random details about Monk include the following:

- When he's alone, he tends to talk to his deceased wife, Trudy. She's nothing more than a figment of his imagination, but she always knows just what to say, and he swears he can still feel it when he touches her. She's, essentially, his Voice of Reason and conscience.
- He's constantly on an emotional rollercoaster, going from just fine one day to a complete wreck the next.
- His closest friends are John Munch and Johnny Smith.
- However comfortable he may seem in the Apharverse, he misses his home like you would not believe.
- He's a lot more open minded than he once was, due to all the Weird in his new home.

I, as the mun, try to portray Monk as best I can without making any ZOMGZMAJOR character changes. I try to keep him as close to canon as possible while keeping in mind the influence of the game environment.

I like to think I do a pretty good job, regardless of how wonked out my writing can sometimes be.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a painfully detailed description of Monk as you know him at
apharsites. This is as best as I can describe his traits at this current point in time, or, as of August 27, 2006. Stay tuned for the
milliways_bar and
canonwars editions!
