So I have this internship at NIST this summer, and while I generally enjoy it, I'm realizing that my future needs to involve food. In the down time between loading samples, I sit at my computer and look at food blogs. I could do it all day. Seriously. If I had an endless supply (which I basically do), I could spend all day looking at pictures of food and reading about people's recipes and experiences with cooking. I think that the strongest pull of nutrition for me is that it's the science of food. I mean, science + food. That's perfect. And then stick health and helping people in there and there's nothing missing. So, although research like I'm doing this summer is interesting, it doesn't fulfil my need to surround myself with food (or people). I turn to the internet for that.
The thing is, I couldn't give up the science part. I don't think I'd be satisfied with being a chef/baker, because I do love science and using that part of my brain.
Maybe I'll just have a food blog or something. Or a bakery/cafe on the side. Except that's not practical for a scientist, really. Perhaps a nutritionist with a bakery/cafe on the side. Or I could go the route of nutritionist in an undernourished country, which would be awesome because I bet I would be able to cook with people all the time. I guess I'll just have to wait until grad school to decide.
It's funny because I went into this internship thinking I would figure out how I felt about research, but I really just found out how I feel about food.
