My investment in The 100 is pretty much the driving force of my TV viewing these days. I've wanted a familiar online outlet for discussion and general hand-wringing glee.
I am qualified to answer that question: "Is it better than it sounds?"
YES. I almost didn't watch it too. But I was determined to stay on the rowing machine one evening CW was rerunning The 100 pilot so I casually caught most of episode one. The first thing that struck me was how. much. better. the show was than the "Lord of the Flies" pitch I'd seen going around. I immediately got caught up and sucked in. I was a little uncertain if my heart could handle the show (it was so engaging I didn't know if I could survive a cancellation) --but about episode 5, I was solidly in love. Forever in love. I think this is the single best program the CW has ever done. I hope renewing it shows they must realize that too.
I love the survival-on-earth & space station stories. The show moves like the wind too... pretty much every plot point (except one and I can forgive them one) bullets through for just the right amount of time before trucking on to the next plot.
Worth mentioning, the adults are fantastic. The young actors, though, they are acting their little hearts out. In the pilot, they're decent already--but by episode 12 we've got some knockout performances. And I sincerely like every single one of them (for a variety of reasons).
I don't think I can oversell it. :) Maybe it won't win you over quite the same way that it's captivated me-- However it's worth giving a chance.
