It's been very nice to have rats around the place again. I'd forgotten the warm hesistant weight of them, and the way they can move smoothly and artfully, but then break into the most ridiculous half-hopping to cover distances. And the questing poise when they stretch out with their noses in the air as if they're having a moment of intense wistful nostalgia (into my tiny ratty heart an air that kills...) when they're trying to judge a jump. And when they just take you for granted and treat you like furniture and run up and down you en route to somewhere more interesting.
They are such climbers and wrigglers. And they're silky. They like to sit on my shoulders and investigate my ears with their noses. They think my toes are food when I have socks on, but recognise them as inedible when I'm barefoot.
The current residents are teenagers and are playfighting like crazy. Apparently the goal is to pin down your opponent and nuzzle the back of their neck - symbolic victory! So the other rat will try to avoid this by rearing up on its back legs. During this stage they look like they're dancing; both upright and swaying, looking for openings, matching each other's movements.
