Pete was one of the nicest guys I have ever met, as genuine as they come. This world is a poorer place without him. He will be missed. I pray he is in a better place now, watching over us. His passing, while a great tragedy, is made worse by the fact that he was so young, 29. We all celebrated his birthday just days before his death. He was happy, surrounded by all the people who loved him. I always looked forward to hanging out with Pete because he had this gentle way about him that made me comfortable and at ease. Add to that his genuine interest in people's lives, when he asked how you were, he meant it and really wanted to know. He was doing so well in his life too. He really liked his job as a graphic designer and was quite popular with the ladies. He had not one mean bone in his body and seemed to always say the right thing at the right time. I am grateful to have known Pete and will truly miss him.
Pete is the fourth friend in the last 10 years that has passed away. With every death, a piece of me dies with them. That is why I feel so truly empty sometimes. But I do try to appreciate & not take for granted the people in my life now. As cliched as it is - it's a cliche for a reason - you just never know when that last conversation or last movie you see or that last band you listened to together or even that last time you simply just shook hands will be. Try to savor whatever time you do spend with your loved ones and don't let silly arguments or petty disagreements drive a wedge between a friendship or relationship. All that will do is lead to a tremendous amount of regret and guilt in the end. I only speak for myself but I feel this could apply to everyone.
This Spiritualized song encapsulates this moment precisely. Pete liked Spiritualized from what I remember.
Spiritualized: Hold On
You gotta hold on baby to those you hold dear
Hang on to the people you love
Cuz death cannot part us if life already has
Hold on to those you hold dear
You gotta hold on baby to those that you love
Cuz hell's not below us or heaven above
And death cannot take what you've already lost
Hold on to those you hold dear
You gotta hold on baby to those you hold dear
You'll get back the love that you send
And time makes it harder where words already failed
Hold on to those you hold dear
You gotta hold on baby to those you hold dear
Hang on to the people you love
Cuz death cannot part us if life already has
Hold on to those you hold dear
