4. I wrote something.

3. I am the luckiest fangirl in the whole world. Not only am I in ds/6 degrees *takes a moment to bask in the joy of that* but I am going to go visit omphale23! YES!!!!!!!!! \o/ *wins at life*

2. I am far, far behind on comments, including comments overdue to brilliant, generous, smart people. People who give good advice and people who write awesome, much-cheering snippets of great joy. But today I'm taking a break from my steady diet of woe, giddiness, and horny Canadians to talk with you about...

1. Kitchens! I'm planning out the kitchen cabinets. We're using Lowes stock unfinished cabinets for the base cabinets (oh, yes, they will be painted bright pretty colors, yes they will!), and Andreas (who I want to keep after the construction project is over) will be building us simple doorless boxes for above.

Here, have a not-to-scale, not-pretty drawing of my kitchen:

It's at one end of the open floorplan kitchen, dining area, living area space we've created. There'll be a bar and stools behind the range and a dining table behind that.

It's much, much improved from the previous kitchen, but it'll still be challenging. Most of our plates, bowls, glasses, and some canisters with spices and staples, are going to go in the open cabinets on the north east *blushes* (top) wall. Base cabinets will be along the north east wall and the sticky-out bit on the left. There won't be a lot of cabinet storage, as the fridge, range, dishwasher, and sink eat much of it.

So today's decision is where I want drawers and where I want cabinets. Any suggestions for how to best use the space? I'm considering a lazy susan type thingie for the corner, but I've never had one and the ones I've seen in other people's houses seem awkward and underused. I'm more tempted to just put a door in the back of the cabinet (facing the dining area) for a secret storage nook there. But would it be stupid to sacrifice what little storage I can eke out of the kitchen?

The bases I'm selecting from tend towards four drawers of varying sizes or a cabinet with a drawer above.

Most big things will fit in the big closet or hanging from the pot rack. It's been so long, I'm a bit hazy, but I have a pretty healthy collection of spatulas and hand tools and such. So drawers seem more important than big cupboard space. Also, whatever ends up being the island/table might be a hand-me-down from B's antiquer mom, and if it has storage it would likely be cabinet style, rather than drawers.

Our other big, pressing question is countertops. For our needs, wants, and budget, we've narrowed it down to tile or Ikea butcherblock. For tile, I'd go for glazed ceramic, as big as I can get it (12x12). We haven't been able to find suitable tiles at that size in pretty colors I like. There's one that's pretty good, none that make me swoon. Grout sucks, but tile is tough and cheap and durable and such. Leaning towards the butcherblock, in lieu of swoony tile. Any thoughts?

Wow. A kitchen. I mean, wow.
