I finished my latest Elric novel. For once he got the girl. I'm not sure I can deal. Elric is supposed to be tortured. He NEVER gets the girl. Something has to be wrong. Maybe I misread it.
I started on Jack Vance's Tales of the Dying Earth. So far, girl getting hasn't been so much an issue. The stories have all been about sorcerer-scientists who just make the girl they want in a vat. One tried making a man, but he couldn't figure out how to make him more intelligent than a lizard. Strangely.. I could relate to that. Understandably, he was quite frustrated, and seemed annoyed by women who wandered into his garden of carnivorous plants. The more I talk about this guy, the more I like him.
The Tales of the Dying Earth is interesting. Once again, it's moody and brooding. It takes place in the far future, and the sun is going out. Earth is slowly slipping into eternal darkness as sorcerers experiment and attempt to recover the lost knowledge of mathematics, and the manipulation of life, time and space. It's a dark and compelling vision.
