I don't understand...

My mom and I bought a new router today in hopes of finally fixing our wireless problem (and getting faster and better wireless). There is still a problem. We just don't know where.
Logically, the problem can't be with DSL or our modem since the Internet works well if the modem is directly connected to the desktop.
We've tried switching around cables, so that shouldn't be the problem either. All of the correct lights also light up, which to me also implies being set up correctly.
Since we can't connect with our old router or the new router, the problem is probably not in the router itself.
From what I can tell, the settings on the computer are also ok (automatically obtain IP, no proxies, etc).
Where can the problem be???

EDIT: I fixed it. Apparently, my DSL provider switched our username on us. Previously, typing in _________ as our username was enough, but now we have to type in ___________@pacbell.net. I also changed the LAN connection (which is not the same as the DSL connection) settings. However, I'm still having issues setting up security, and have decided to play with that later.

wireless, computer
