today i had the honour and priviledge of meeting and briefly hanging out with Paul Resssesagabina. I had a brief private meeting with him before he addressed thousands of people where i spoke to him about my own efforts to spread awareness and encourage actions against the Sudanese genocide. After an incredibly inspiring speech, I went home incredibly confused. Intellectually, i had a major problem even conversing with someone who's saved approximately 1300 lives. What do you say to such a person? Think about that. Me, after telling them about the activism i was doing, i spoke about how many people wanted to see them and how it was such a big event i could barely even sneak in my mom despite the fact i helped organize the event. That made him laugh. Again, i made someone who saved close to 1300 people laugh, that's kinda cool i guess.
It led to some major introspective thinking. How can i justify my bullshit sort of pseudo intellectual life, which largely supports various exploitive practices. For example, the food i eat, either supports local farmers which are subsidized by my government (which by extention, directly contributes to the suffering of millions of people) or supports agrobusiness (still the same problem).
Or the clothes i wear. WHile i pat myself on the back about the odd sweatshop free article of clothing i procure, by and large, i wear clothes that are built on the murder of others. Intellectually speaking, i could only justify this if i was doing a particularly high level of awesomeness. But with my chronic underperforming in conjunction with my utter failures as an activist to really do something huge, intellectualy speaking, i cannot justify my own existence. This isn't to say i'm some depressed loser with no life, but it was a bit of a trip to go to bed with the sudden realization that while i've led a fun life, i cannot justify it on any sort of utilitiarion grounds.
I mean here i was tripping out over an ex best friend.
i'm giving you a pretentious challenge, ostensibly to justify my own existrence. My honoured guest issued us a challenge to encourage others in the west to influence their governments/corporations to respect human rights in sudan, burundi, congo, somalia, rwanda, etc. and how behind every civil war, there is always a western leader/corporation. please, both right and lefties, look at your pension funds, look atyour stock options, where are they invested? Demand better, demand more for your buck, do what you can to stop such an attrocity.
