Happy B-day, Brady!

Today is Brady Boo's birthday! To celebrate, I visited his classroom to take part in a Montessori ceremony in which a candle is placed in the middle of the room to represent the sun, and the birthday boy carries a globe one revolution around it for each year of his life. Between each orbit, the teacher shows the class pictures of the child from that age of the celebrant's life. If you can put aside the creepy quasi-religious aspects of the ritual (and of a lot of Montessori in general), it really was cool experience. I think Brady, who often is overshadowed by his force-of-nature sister, especially enjoyed the limelight for a change.

Here's the very first picture of my son I posted in LJ:

While I was at the kids' school today, I gave a presentation about chemistry to my wife's class. God, kids are WAY smarter than when I was that age. Example:

Precocious 10 y.o.: "I know what DDT stands for."
Me: "Uh...I know what DDT is."
P10YO: "Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane"
Me: "I like apple juice."

I've been doing a lot of clothes shopping lately and have decided that deconstructed, silkscreened hoodie sweatshirts will not go out of style until the nanosecond I break down and buy one.

Okay, better get moving. I'm at a coffee shop in East Lansing, MI that was around back in Nineteen-diggity-ought when my friends and I went to Michigan State, but it was infinitely more boho-cool back then. (Don, do you remember our nickname for Espresso Royale? It was something like "House o' Pretentiousness", but I can't remember exactly.) Today it is a Starbucks clone with free intraweb, so that's progress for you. Time to go back to the in-laws' unwired household, so you kids be good while I'm gone.

Peace.
