The creek suddenly flooded the Village this morning, far worse than the Great River Flood of 2006 did. My basement It is a mess.
So - since the house is still standing, even if everything is covered in mud, the main living floor is ok.
Let me counter the gloom and doom with what Sunshine Thoughts I can come up with.
A) I drove 30+ miles to get a small sump pump, which is now emptying out the basement. May take it all night, but at least something is happening. I found out how to get it together so that the hose (which I was smart enough to know I should buy) does not come off anymore. even though I dropped the screwdriver into the freezing cold, you can't see thought it, water that I was standing in in my basement. And I had to really think and figure out how to plug it in and NOT be standing in all that water.
C) they are turning off all the power and gas in each and every house in Fort Plain's large, affected, flooded area, meter by meter. I managed to show them that my electrical box was above the water line, and in my 1830s/1860s basements, there were no outlets except one attached to a floor joist/basement ceiling beam, and up by the window - the one running the sump pump that was emptying the basement!
I managed to convince them to NOT turn my power off. And for some reason they did not want to go the whole length of the house (70 or so feet) wading into that thigh-deep water, to get to the gas meter, so they are turning that off outside. I can live with no gas, that is only the apartment furnace and my stove.
I feel victorious on a crappy day. They are keeping the 'lectric on.
