It started off as a bright, cool and althogether pleasant day. Starbuck's in hand, I drove into the wilds of south-of-the-metroplex Texas, to a small town named "Clifton" to install a printer for one of our senior VP's. The drive down was great, once I got off 35 and onto the more back country roads. For some reason, lately I've been fascinated by windmills and take an almost childish delight in the mere sight of one. Well, i was very childish today.
Their ranch is beautiful, in the midst of a "Norse Heritage Area", and was actually built by Norse folk that had been on a wagon train up from Galveston. Obviously they've expanded a bit on the house, but it was certainly beautifully put together. The owner's themselves were pleasant and seemed to fit in well with the community (of which numerous Staubach staff have ranches thereabouts).
The drive home was even better, through Meridian, where I stopped at a flea market, looking vainly for antique insulators (glass constructions that inhabit old telephone poles) and then through the familiar Glen Rose area, where a scant two years ago, I got married.
More and more, I wish for a place in the country, even if it is a small shack, to go to get out of the city on the weekends and holidays and enjoy the quiet and the night sky.
Then, after a pleasant afternoon with me and my thoughts, I come home to poorly thought out comments made by me and a degree of bitterness that is painful on both sides of the house. *sigh*
So, I thought I'd sit down and recall the part of the day that was so great...big sky, a few hills, lots of quiet, untrafficed roads, no deadlines, just nice to be out amongst the world.
Now off to the company christmas party. Where oh where are my sedatives?
Still, it was a nice day. Maybe the rest of it will improve.
